The key challenge facing R&D led manufacturers in Europe today is how to innovate fast- to meet new environmental legislation requirements and the challenge of low-cost labour based manufacturing.

To reduce consumption of resources (materials and energy) new processes and materials are required for the development and manufacture of products. The ability to meet this challenge quickly is necessary for business survival.

To stay ahead of new competitors, faster ways of developing new products are required. And as new products are inroduced more often production runs get shorter and need to be 'right-first-time' as the opportunities for fixing problems later dissapears.

Additive Layer Manufacturing can reduce weight and waste, reuse and recycle and uses less time and energy to develop and make parts. Materials Solutions enables rapid, low cost access to new technologies and expert technologists to assist in meeting these challenges.

Materials Solutions operates an applications development centre part funded by both Advantage West Midlands and the MNT initiative managed by the Technology Strategy Board for the department of Business Innovation and Skills.
